Boreal Kids and their families celebrated cultural and biological diversity at the Sixth Annual, Seventh Generation Walk for Mother Earth, April 19th, 2009.
We had fun and learned some things about the earth and each other!
We were joined by faith groups, who offered perspectives on our relationship with the earth and future generations, at an inspiring, interfaith, circle at Juba Park before the walk. We learned that many different religions have similar teachings about caring for the earth.

We took to the streets, with our placards, banners and drums to celebrate Earth Day by reminding people to think about how the decisions we make today, about how we use the earth's resources, will affect life for future generations. The Indigenous women who founded this annual event told us that if we look ahead to how our actions will affect people born seven generations ahead of us, we will make the best decisions we can to ensure a healthy future for them.

A free picnic lunch was served at the end of the walk. We listened to speakers on water issues, heard about efforts to stop pollution discharge from the Louisiana Pacific forest products mill in the Swan Valley and learned how large scale hydro development has had a negative affect on Indigenous communities in our province. We also heard from a trapper in Grassy Narrows about her legal struggle to build two small cabins on her families traditional trap line.
These are ongoing issues that local community members and groups are working on in ongoing campaigns to protect the earth and the rights of Indigenous Peoples to plan, manage and control the activities on their traditional territories.
Join us next year, for the SEVENTH, Seventh Generation Walk for Mother Earth, April 18th.

Birds Hill Park Ski and Hayride
Boreal Kids had a great time jumping off the hayride into the snow, on one of the warmest Sunday's this winter.
The hayride was part of a Boreal Kids hayride and cross country ski event, at Birds Hill Park, February 22nd, 2009.
Boreal Kids is an environmental education program for children and families, brought to you by the Boreal Forest Network. Our aim is to promote awareness of the boreal region, its' flora and fauna, threats to our eco-system and solutions that everyone can participate in.
We invited families to come out on a free hayride and cross country ski excursion to encourage children to get outside and appreciate nature, even in the winter. It, also, gave us a chance to meet some of our faithful supporters and introduce them to other, like minded, people.
A special thank-you to, Harvey Zahn. Mr. Zahn has taught physical education in Winnipeg schools for 33 years and has been an avid skier and ski instructor for as many years. Mr. Zahn volunteered his time to demonstrate cross country ski technique to Boreal Kids and adults. We hope he will offer his talents, again, next year.
Another thank-you goes out to Bikes and Beyond, on Henderson Highway, in Winnipeg, who offered a 30% discount to participants.
We look forward to expanding on this event next winter. Thanks to those who made it a great day. We had a lot of fun. Check out the pictures.
Join us next year.
